Review of: ‘Oh, Chickadee!’
By: Patty Wainwright, Biologist
What a delightful and informative book for a child to explore visually and intellectually — the life history of the black-capped chickadee. The illustrations are life-like and friendly, and the natural history information is accurate and written in a fun-to-read style.
The vibrant colors on the cover and title – ‘Oh, Chickadee!’ – immediately invite you into the book. Once into the pages, the splashes of background color surrounding the little chickadee support the story line. For example, the simple description and the painting of the nest give the reader a perfect image of its structure. The view from above the chickadee’s head gives the nest warmth and love.
The story line is succinct and yet, very scientifically informative, teaching the reader the miraculous life history of the chickadee. The blue-eyed girl unites this natural world with us, giving the reader a glimpse of oneness with these little birds’ lives. The last two pages with the young chickadee overlooking its nest and the feathered fledgling highlight the ending of this lovely book.
‘Oh, Chickadee!’ is a great learning tool engaging the reader into the life of a bird as depicted in the text and illustrations. The reference pages are icing-on-the-cake, providing additional information for curious readers.
DESCRIPTION: Its curiosity, friendliness, bravery, and acrobatic antics have long made the black- capped chickadee a favorite of bird watchers of all ages. Oh, Chickadee! presents a year in the life of a chickadee, answering such questions as, Where do they nest? How do they protect themselves from predators? and How do they survive the frigid winter? This informative book, written by award-winning author Jennifer Richard Jacobson and illustrated in vibrant chalk pastel and charcoal pencil by celebrated illustrator Jamie Hogan, brings the more hidden world of these endearing birds into view.

Kirkus Review: April 1, 2023
Maine librarian Hinrichs profiles 102-year-old Virginia Oliver, “the oldest person lobstering in Maine, and maybe even in the world!”
The Lobster Lady rises before dawn, eats breakfast, and sets out with her adult son Max to her boat (named Virginia after her years ago). Out on the water they pull their traps, measure and sort the lobsters, and band the claws of the keepers. When Virginia sets aside a crab, it claws her, and the injury requires stitches. The doctor’s tactless question—”What were you doing out there anyway?”—prompts a flow of memories: spending childhood summers on the Neck, an island where her father ran a store and blacksmith shop; returning the rest of the year to live with her aunts and grandparents on the mainland and attend school; learning to helm a boat; marrying a lobsterman; and doing various jobs but finally joining him on the water. The backmatter includes more information about the subject, changes in the industry and community, two simple recipes, and sources, including numerous admiring media accounts. This inspiring story is set on full-bleed images done with chalk pastel on roughened paper that convey a strong sense of the waterwoman’s world, the boats, the sea, the sky. Even more than the matter-of-fact text, the saturated illustrations chronicle Oliver’s long life and convey a rich sense of history. Most characters present White.

Tamen longs to see the stars, but none are visible in the light-polluted sky above the fire escape of his urban apartment building. Even in the neighborhood park, the stars are hidden by city lights. Tamen’s mom takes him far from the city, and for one magical night on the shore of a wilderness pond, the Milky Way in all its glory belongs to them.
“Beautifully illuminates the importance of our children experiencing the wonder of a dark sky, and our responsibility to preserve it.”
Charles Fulco, NASA Solar System Ambassador
”Hogan’s illustrations use pastels with a blue and yellow palette to create the feeling of glowing lights in the night. While the surface story of a boy interested in stars is unexceptional, what makes this story stand out is the relationship between a boy and his hardworking mother, who works the night shift at the hospital, and a special night they share together outside of their usual busy routine. Tamen sees a new side of his mother; together, they feel at one with the universe, and when they return home, Tamen cherishes the memories…”

“Chalmers creates a vivid sense of Oxbow Island and its close-knit, year-round residents.
While the rescue plot is compelling and cheerworthy, it has wider effects. Bear’s investigation doesn’t just benefit plants and animals, it also brings the island community closer. In addition, Bear comes to a new, more mature understanding about the conflict with his ex-friend, with some well-earned reflections on growing up. The chapter head illustrations by Hogan are charming additions.
Funny, warmhearted, and involving, with a timely ecological message.”

“One of the new tiger cubs has escaped from the reserve!”
When a tiger cub escapes from a nature reserve near Neel’s island village, the rangers and villagers hurry to find her before the cub’s anxious mother follows suit and endangers them all. Mr. Gupta, a rich newcomer to the island, is also searching—he wants to sell the cub’s body parts on the black market. Neel and his sister, Rupa, resolve to find the cub first and bring her back to the reserve where she belongs.
The hunt for the cub interrupts Neel’s preparations for an exam to win a prestigious scholarship at a boarding school far from home. Neel doesn’t mind—he dreads the exam and would rather stay on his beloved island in the Sunderbans of West Bengal with his family and friends.
But through his encounter with the cub, Neil learns that sometimes you have to take risks to preserve what you love. And sometimes you have to sacrifice the present for the chance to improve the future.

DESCRIPTION
Adapt, or face extinction.
The golden toad used to inhabit the cloud forests of Costa Rica, but when the weather became too warm and dried up the pools where its eggs hatched, the golden toad disappeared. It has not been seen in more than twenty years. This amphibian is just one of several species in A Warmer World, a thought-provoking and informative account of how global climate change has affected wildlife over the past several decades.
Species by species, acclaimed nonfiction children’s author Caroline Arnold describes how warmer weather alters ecosystems, forcing animals to adapt or become extinct. Arnold’s clear and straightforward text is complemented by Jamie Hogan’s collage-style illustrations. Reminiscent of a nature journal, the book will inspire readers to start their own research into this significant global issue. A glossary and listing of websites and books for further exploration is included.

“In the case of Blackaby’s title, Hogan includes black and white endpapers packed full of crabs, pinecones, snakes, and various flora and fauna. The pictures inside the book are rendered accurately without even so much as a sniffle of anthropomorphism or cartoonish emotion. Hogan’s preferred method of madness is to render her images in pastels and charcoal pencils on Canson paper. The results are thick black lines and creatures where the texture of the paper itself pokes through the images. This is particularly effective when Hogan has created the dappled scales of a fish in a pond. She tones it down when she wants to be detailed though, as with a delicate hermit crab or fur of a bee. And if I don’t miss my guess, sometimes Hogan uses the paper to its best natural advantage, as when she creates an instant honeycomb by merely outlining the already existing hexagons of the paper.”

“The stunning art and well-presented information make this an attractive addition to any collection.” –School Library Journal
DESCRIPTION The migration of a most majestic mammal.
In this latest book by acclaimed science writer April Pulley Sayre, young readers follow along as a mother humpback whale and her calf make their annual trek from the warm waters of the Caribbean to their summer feeding grounds off the coast of New England and back again. Within this extraordinary story of migration, Sayre provides information about how humpback whales breathe, sing, and how they got their name—a secondary layer of text expands upon the more intricate details.
But aside from the basics about the humpback whale species, Here Come the Humpbacks! also delves into the dangers these whales face—from other mammals and sea life such as hungry orcas, to man-made threats like pollution and giant ships. Jamie Hogan’s stunning, rich pastel illustrations complement Sayre’s text beautifully, and make this book a great choice for a read-aloud in the classroom, library, or at home.
